State Trooper helps stranded motorists, discovers stolen vehicleBy THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: October 14, 2007) ARDSLEY - Crime 101: If you ever find yourself behind the wheel of a stolen car, it's best not to skimp on gas. But that just wasn't the case just before 9 p.m. Friday with a group of Albany residents who ran out of gas along the New York State Thruway in Ardsley, authorities said. A state trooper who stopped to help also checked the license plate, and quickly found that the 2003 Mazda Tribute had been reported stolen out of Albany. What's more, state police said, the license plates belonged to another car altogether. Among the occupants were an ex-convict on parole from an attempted-murder sentence and a 15-year-old boy. Trooper Miguel Berberena arrested Ansel Caines, 45, paroled in February after serving 16 years for the attempted murder of a police or correction officer, state police Investigator Joseph Becerra said. Caines was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and a parole violation, both felonies. He also was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanors. Also arrested at the time were Alex Jones, 18, and the 15-year-old. Jones was charged with third- and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and endangering the welfare of a child. The boy was charged with the same counts of criminal possession of stolen property, but his case was sent to Family Court. Becerra said the two men and the boy were acquaintances headed for New York City. "The moral of the story is that if you are driving a stolen vehicle, make sure you have fuel in it at all times," Becerra said. |
