Need a Cab? Stay Where You Are and GPS Tracking Will Find One For You

In case you missed Wired magazine’s recent post on “Inside the GPS Revolution: 10 Applications That Make the Most of Location,” one app should interest you whether you’re a taxicab company or rider. Even if you don’t fall into either category, cab4me should get you thinking about how GPS fleet tracking can benefit your business.

Cab4me is a free service that works with the GPS-enabled T-Mobile G1 Android phone and Google Maps. To hail a cab via GPS, you open cab4me and a map displays on your screen, showing your current location. If taxi companies that can pick you up are in the area, a marker shows up on the phone screen. Tap the marker for a list of the cab companies. You can tap each listing for more information and user ratings, if any. After deciding which company you want, tap the Call button to reach the cab company and confirm your pickup location. If no company is in the database, a web search is launched on the phone for local taxi companies. Brilliant, as the British say.

Taxi companies can register for free via a Google account to be included in the cab4me database. The usual contact information is required, along with geographic data on the service area. This is a great way for the firms to gain online exposure, as well as good reviews (hopefully) in the cab4me database.

It’s probably fair to say that any taxi company that has GPS fleet tracking aboard its cabs will gain a competitive advantage. Dispatchers will know immediately where the closest driver is to any fare, and can even send directions to the driver via text message. Related potential beneficiaries of GPS fleet tracking are limousine and shuttle services. But any vehicle fleet operator will appreciate how GPS tracking helps reduce fuel costs, monitor drivers’ habits and make the dispatcher’s job easier. Want to see how?.

Secret’s Out on Santa’s GPS Tracker

We’ve seen some pretty cool GPS fleet tracking maps. But none is quite as cool as the NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) Google map – complete with images and videos of places where Santa Claus made his latest world tour. (We hope NORAD doesn’t take down the site before you read this.)

There’s been a lot of speculation about which GPS fleet tracking system NORAD installed so they could report on the jolly old guy’s whereabouts. Well, it’s time to set the record straight. You can learn all about it here.

Hope you all had a merry, on-track holiday season. We can hardly wait to see what kind of presents Santa will have in store for us in the year ahead.

GPS Vehicle Tracking Bypasses the Tough Times for Fleet Operators

If anyone knows these are tough times for fleet operators, it’s the editorial staff at Automotive Fleet. Their latest blog post pretty well sums up the challenges fleet managers face in this time of fluctuating fuel prices, the Big Three automakers’ plight and many other uncertain global forces.

One thing we know for certain is that any operator can weather this economic storm by deploying GPS fleet tracking. The technology isn’t just about monitoring vehicle locations and speed. A well-implemented GPS fleet tracking solution will have positive effects on many other areas of your business. Some examples:

  • Accounting – Will benefit from the many types of reports generated from your fleet tracking website.
  • Customer Service - Your staff and customers will benefit from increased accuracy, faster status reporting, detailed billing information and fewer delays in arrival time.
  • Dispatch - A GPS tracking system lets dispatchers send drivers to more jobs without the cost of hiring more drivers or purchasing more vehicles.
  • Drivers - A GPS tracking system provides them all the details necessary to show time of arrival, time spent at a site and more.
  • Sales Department - Clearer routing promotes increased revenues by making it easier for your sales team to arrive at more appointments ever day, thus increasing their sales volume and your bottom line.
  • Upper Management - Increased efficiency saves time and money, which results in a larger return on your investment.

Those are just a few of the benefits that help fleet operators prosper in any economic climate. For more details, visit this web page.

Try a 3 a.m. GPS Wake-up Call

It’s been a year since BusinessFleet.com published this great article on 8 Misconceptions About GPS Vehicle Tracking. But it’s well worth reading again.

Possibly the most important myth it busts is: All GPS tracking systems are essentially equal. That’s still true today. The basic technology for GPS fleet tracking is available to any company wise enough to utilize it. But how they use it is what sets one company apart from the others. As the article says:

“Many providers simply set up basic GPS tracking capabilities, but don’t commit to helping customers leverage this powerful technology to transform the way they do business. When evaluating GPS tracking providers, determine how much interest each has shown in learning about the customer’s business and specific requirements and goals.”

So even if your GPS tracking provider gives you all the bells and whistles, will they be there to handle that 3 a.m. phone call — like the one that became a big issue in the latest presidential campaign?

We’re here for our customers 18 hours a day. And someone’s always on call for the 3 a.m. situation. Or the 2 a.m. or the 4 a.m. We can honestly say we have our clients covered 24/7/365.

Try it before you sign on with a GPS tracking service provider. Call them at 3 a.m. to see if you they provide the help you expect. If they don’t, call 877-299-6544. Come to think of it, call that number even if they do.
