GPS Tracking is Big Help in Small-Town Police Forces
If you thought GPS fleet tracking meant looking at little dots on an online map, think again. The variety of data that a GPS fleet tracking system can display is growing at (pardon the expression) an alarming rate – especially in law enforcement.
Even in Amador, one of California’s smallest counties, police patrol cars are equipped with sophisticated onboard computers tied in to GPS tracking technology. As the Ledger Dispatch reports, any Jackson officer can:
“…bring up a screen that displays the location and status of not only his fellow Jackson police officers who are mobile at that moment - flagged by name and rank - but also each Sutter Creek and Ione police officer, as well as each sheriff’s deputy currently on patrol. By clicking on a name, he can see what task the officer is currently engaged in. The result is a razor-sharp overview of all law enforcement endeavors and public safety issues in the county.”
Knowing where each officer is also helps when backup is needed. The ability to locate each other via GPS fleet tracking helps improve response times when officers need it most.
GPS tracking is just one element of the onboard system in Amador, albeit an important one. The system also brings up arrest records and photos of suspects that officers are about to confront. It can let an officer know if a driver’s vehicle registration fees have been paid even if the license plates don’t show the correct year, thus avoiding an unnecessary stop.
GPS fleet tracking has proved its worth in many police departments. Of course, police aren’t the only entities that can benefit from GPS fleet tracking. It’s easy to install GPS trackers in any vehicle fleet. Each vehicle’s location, speed and idle time are among the factors that can be tracked. The results can be reviewed with each driver to help improve performance. Need a demo? Just click here.
